We invite you to browse our New Media Exemplar Library entries, listed above. Each exemplar features a series of video interviews with a professional media maker, organized by chapter. Click on a link above to go to a brief overview of an exemplar. At the overview, click on the left-hand number to view an exemplar. The videos are supported by the following downloadable MSWord documents:
  • Important vocabulary terms;
  • Tools of the Trade, an overview of the relevant tools used by the media maker;
  • Group activities relating to the work of the media maker;
  • A text transcript of the interview, organized by chapter;
  • Production notes written by the exemplar's lead producer.

Nick Bertozzi,
Comic Book Artist

Nick Bertozzi is an cartoonist best known for his Ignatz-Award winning "map-book" Boswash. He was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2002, an Ignatz Award for "Outstanding Comic" in 2003, and two 2003 Harvey Awards for "Best New Series" and "Best New Talent". Nick's work often focuses on the theme of creativity and what drives people create. He teaches at the School of Visual Arts and participates in a LiveJournal virtual studio called Act-i-vate. In addition to his indie comicbooks, Nick does an ongoing series for Nickelodeon Magazine, as well as freelance illustration. For fun, Nick plays in a band and rides his bike. Born in Providence, RI, he now lives in New York City with his wife Kim and daughter Sabina.

Cory Doctorow,
Novelist and Blogger

Cory Doctorow ( craphound.com ) is a science fiction novelist, bloggerand technology activist. He is the co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing ( boingboing.net ), and a contributor to Wired, Popular Science, Make, The New York Times, and many other newspapers, magazines and websites. He was formerly Director of European Affairs for the Electronic Frontier Foundation ( eff.org ), a non-profit civil liberties group that defends freedom in technology law, policy,standards and treaties. In that capacity, he worked to balance international treaties, polices and standards oon copyright and related rights, advocating in the halls of governments, the United Nations, standards bodies, corporations, universities and non-profits. In 2006/2007, he will serve as the Fulbright Chair at the Annenberg Center for Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California. His novels are published by Tor Books and simultaneously released on the Internet under Creative Commons licenses that encourage their reuse and sharing, a move that increases his sales by enlisting his readers to help promote his work. He co-founded the open source peer-to-peer software company OpenCola, sold to OpenText,Inc in 2003, and presently serves on the boards and advisory boards of the Participatory Culture Foundation, the MetaBrainz Foundation, Technorati, Inc, and Onion Networks, Inc.

Matthew Lamb,
Special Effects Artist

Mathew is a commercial director and visual effects artist living in Topanga Canyon, CA.

Mathew's career started with a bachelors degree in natural sciences from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, England. From there he moved into neuroanatomy at University College London, where he wrote a seminal paper, "The Neurology of Kinetic Art", with Prof. Semir Zeki.

He came to California in 1991 where he obtained a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Southern California, working en route at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and the Robotics Laboratory in UCLA.

Taking his detailed knowledge of computational vision Mathew made a segue into visual effects, writing the software used to render components of the film Fight Club for Pixel Liberation Front in Venice, CA. From there he moved to Digital Domain, also in Venice, (where he was instrumental in building their motion control pipeline) and then to Asylum in Santa Monica where as an artist he worked on films that included Pearl Harbor>, Master and Commander, Minority Report and Black Hawk Down.

Since going freelance, Mathew has written software for the film The Aviator and worked on many commercials, music videos and feature films as an artist, technical director, CG supervisor and consultant, latterly being signed to the bi-costal agency Notorious Pictures as a director.

Sean Cole,
Radio Host and Reporter

Sean Cole is a radio host and reporter for WBUR Boston. He started there as a newsroom intern in 1997, and served since as a production assistant and writer for WBUR's Morning Edition, a producer for Here and Now, Associate Producer for WRNI's Morning Edition, and Senior Reporter for the Inside Out Documentary Unit. His radio work includes in-depth documentaries like South Africas Kwaito Generation and With This Ring-Pledging Abstinence , as well as shorter features on various topics.  Coles work aired also on the Public Radio International programs This American Life and Savvy Traveler, NPR's Only A Game, All Things Considered and Living on Earth, and WNYC's The Next Big Thing. In 2001 he won a Radio-Television News Directors Association Award in the Best Feature category for his profile of a Boswell Sisters tribute group.

Graffiti Artist Collective

TATS CRU, Inc. is a group of Bronx-based professional muralists whose work in aerosol has changed the perception of graffiti as art. Twenty four years ago, three teenagers began their artistic careers by creating subway graffiti. What began as a recognition tectic has evolved into a powerful, expressive style that has brought TATS CRU to the forefront of mural art. TATS CRU has spearheaded the battle to change people?s perception of graffiti art. Proof of their success and the acceptance of graffiti as an art form has been their work for the Smithsonian?s Institute?s 35th Annual Folklife Festival, where TATS was chose to represent NYC muralists. TATS CRU's work now adorns several NYC public schools and hospitals. TATS CRU has also lectured at Hunter College, MIT, UMass, Cortlandt University, Brooks School and many community-based organizations.
